There is undeniably a burgeoning growth of coffee specialty stores and hipster cafes all over Kuala Lumpur. And scouting for the newest and hippest places in town has become a favourite past time for urbanites, be it to relax with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, people watching, feigning being hard at work on the laptop and yes, capturing that brag worthy 'gram. Heartpatrick convinced KL's urban explorer, Bern Lim, to down copious amount of caffeine in the name of research to bring you the 12 best-loved and instagrammed cafes in and around KL.

CREAM, or sometimes referred to as The Roast Things, their roaster, is unequivocally Scandinavian in design. Bringing in shafts of natural sunlight, this gorgeous bright space is constantly awash with white and grey tones. Combined that with a series of carefully curated wooden furniture, this is the perfect place to escape into that Nordic dreamscape while sipping on a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

A Taiwanese-inspired establishment, the owners clearly have a tasteful eye for everything minimalist ranging from its clean interior lines to hanging bare light bulbs. The place features a pastel and neutral colour palette, an ode to nature which is also prominently featured here as you gaze out the windows overlooking the neighbourhood's greenery.

This café hailing from Seoul could not have chosen a better location to spotlight its raw and industrial motif. Bean Brothers occupies an extremely spacious two-level warehouse facility that has now been striped bear to expose high brick walls, structural elements like metal and high-sheen steel which are complemented with low hanging candescent light bulbs, resulting in the place being an epitome of the industrial design.

A cafe truly deserving of its name, Awesome hits all the right notes in the delivery of an industrial vintage cafe right down to the small details. Check out their series of charming wooden photo light boxes which are apparently also for sale, the handsome display of charming collectibles from yesteryear and damn those amber lab water bottles that are begging to be stolen haha.

Located in an industrial part of town, it would seem that that would be the obvious aesthetics to go with. Not only has the café successfully incorporate the ubiquitous style in its theme, it has ensured that it remains edgy and modern and goes beyond the atypical industrial raw look, by even including a chandelier as its centre-piece. And unlike its name, this airy two-storey double volume space is constantly bathed with natural sunlight thanks to its glass facade.

This café boasts of an old world charm and atmosphere where as though every piece of furniture and kitschy antique and paraphernalia here has been intricately curated to remind its patrons of the yesteryears of this classic Oriental enclave. There is no shortage of appealing photos to be taken at this café as almost every angle presents a unique perspective for one to tell a story.

Thanks to gentrification we have seen prewar shophouses given the facelift they well deserve. VCR is one fine example of how an old shophouse on a nondescript street in the city was restored by being treated to refined industrial touches while retaining its original prewar two floor structure. The result – a tasteful café made to feel cosy with its high ceilings, tall windows and warm lighting, the vital essentials required for that perfect snapshot.

One of the most desired attributes in real estate is space. WhupWhup provides just that by transforming a former yarn production factory into a whimsical beauty. Much of the factory's facade and fittings have been retained to give that raw industrial charm with other curious decorations like a grand piano and phonograph thrown in to complete the eclectic mix of furniture.

There is a palpable black and white theme going on in this coffee shop. The brick and tiled walls, painted over exposed ceiling, display racks and the coffeebar's countertop, all in neutral tones, are disrupted only by the occasional brown tabletops. However, most intriguing of this monochrome canvas is the mosaic tiles feature wall that depicts the name of the café with its trademark bowler hat.

An unlikely neighbourhood perhaps, but Sri Petaling bears witness to a recent surge in artisanal coffee place, and 103 is most obviously a crowd favourite. It's not hard to appreciate that a ton of effort has been poured into perfecting everything from the deco, to the lighting, to the selection of staff and their matching uniform and style.
